All About Country Music
Country music belongs to Billboard's country and western music category. It is a
mix of musical forms that originated from the southern part of the United States
and the Appalachian Mountains. Evolving rapidly in the 1920s, country music is
rooted in blues, Celtic music, folk music, hokum, gospel music and old-time
music. It wasn't until the 1940s that this type of music was called "country
music." Previously, it was called hillbilly music, but many found the term to be
derogatory.
The different ethnic groups in the Southwestern United States were the ones
responsible for creating the music that became the "western" in the Country
Western music.
Elvis Presley and Garth Brooks are two of the top selling country music solo
artists ever. Presley, was on the Louisiana Hayride for about three years. He
was one of the people who defined rock 'n' roll. He is widely known as "The
King." Garth Brooks recorded and performed numerous country music for most of
his music career.
According to statistics, America's most popular radio format is country. As of
2007, country music reportedly reaches over 77 million adults (about 40% of the
US adult population each week.
